The annual deaths from Mycobacterium tuberculosis around the world is estimated at three million. This single pathogen therefore claims more lives than any other. The complete sequence of the M. tuberculosis genome has been made available and what we are leaning from this sequence should help in devising new strategies in our battle against tuberculosis. With 4.4 million base pairs in its genome, it is surpassed in size only by Escherichia coli in the list of bacterial genomes that have been completely sequenced.
